چکیده

Liquid-crystal materials are composed of molecules with strong anisotropy. An optical field can induce appreciable molecular alignment along the field, resulting in a change of the index of refraction that is proportional to the optical intensity. Third-order nonlinear optical phenomena, such as self-focusing of light,1'2 stimulated scattering,3 and third-harmonic generation,4-6 have been observed in these materials. In this Letter, the generation of phase-conjugate wave fronts by degenerate four-wave mixing in p -methoxybenzylidene p-n-butylaniline (MBBA) is reported. MBBA is a nematic liquid crystal at room temperature. The experiment, however, utilized the isotropic phase of this material, which manifests some field-induced short-range order above the transition temperature, T. The nonlinear optical properties of MBBA in this pretransitional state have been investigated elsewhere,7-9 and this material has been found to possess a large nonlinear optical susceptibility, about an order of magnitude larger than that of carbon disulfide. In the presence of an applied optical field with components Ek (w), the third-order nonlinear polarization in an isotropic medium is9

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

Wave Reflection and Refraction at the Interface of Triclinic and Liquid Medium

A Mathematical model has been considered to study the reflection and refraction phenomenon of plane wave at the interface of an isotropic liquid medium and a triclinic (anisotropic) half-space. The incident plane qP wave generates three types of reflected waves namely quasi-P (qP), quasi-SV (qSV) and quasi-SH (qSH) waves in the tric...

Quasi-static electric-field-enhanced degenerate four-wave mixing in a nematic liquid-crystal film.

Degenerate four-wave mixing can be induced or enhanced dramatically when two weak overlapping laser beams are incident upon a nematic liquid-crystal film that is biased by a quasi-static electric field. This phenomenon is shown to be the result of the critical behavior at the Freedericksz transition. The experimental results show that the diffracted intensity is proportional to the third power ...

Crystal-liquid crystal binary phase diagrams.

We propose a new theoretical scheme for the binary phase diagrams of crystal-liquid crystal mixtures by a combination of a phase field model of solidification, the Flory-Huggins theory for liquid-liquid mixing and Maier-Saupe-McMillan (FH-MSM) model for nematic and smectic liquid crystal orderings. The phase field theory describes the crystal phase transition of anisotropic organic crystal and/...

Double peaks of fundamental diffraction efficiency versus biasing of electric fields through the degenerate four-wave mixing process in nematic liquid-crystal films.

The observation of double peaks of diffraction efficiency through the degenerate four-wave mixing process as a function of the biasing electric-field strength in a nematic liquid-crystal film is described. This behavior is due to the high optical nonlinearity of liquid-crystal media and the dramatic modulating effect of an ac voltage on the reorientational Freedericksz transition. The dependenc...
